The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially announced the zoning of its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of Nigeria, marking a pivotal moment in the party’s strategic preparations for the upcoming general elections.

This landmark decision was reached during the PDP’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja. The NEC adopted the recommendation of the zoning committee chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, following extensive consultations with party stakeholders across the country.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, stated: “NEC resolved that since the National Chairman of the party is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 Presidential ticket is hereby zoned to the South. This decision reflects our commitment to equity, inclusion, and national unity.”

The NEC also confirmed Ambassador Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party, solidifying leadership ahead of the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

This zoning move is seen as a strategic effort to restore internal balance and address lingering concerns from previous election cycles. It also opens the door for prominent Southern leaders within the PDP to emerge as potential presidential candidates, with Governors Seyi Makinde, Douye Diri, and others already being mentioned in party circles.
