The Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has spoken out candidly about the surge in racist abuse she has faced since assuming leadership of the party, describing the attacks as “hysterical” and rooted in deep-seated ethno-nationalist rhetoric.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Badenoch expressed her dismay at the intensity of personal attacks, both online and within political circles. She noted that critics have increasingly questioned her legitimacy and achievements, attributing her rise to diversity policies rather than merit. “There’s a certain cadre of people who clearly can’t cope with the fact that I won this and I’m doing it,” she said. “People used to talk about Trump derangement syndrome. I think there’s a Kemi derangement syndrome.”

Badenoch, the first Black woman to lead the Conservative Party, emphasized that the abuse often centers on her race and ethnicity, with online commentary suggesting she could not have succeeded without external help. “There’s a lot of ethno-nationalism creeping up, lots of stuff about my race and my ethnicity and the tropes around, ‘well, she couldn’t possibly have done this all by herself,’” she added.

Born in Wimbledon and raised in Nigeria before returning to the UK at age 16, Badenoch has long advocated for a merit-based society and has previously stated that Britain is “the best place in the world to be Black.” Despite this, she acknowledged that her leadership has triggered backlash from individuals unwilling to accept her success.

As speculation swirls around internal party challenges and declining poll numbers, Badenoch remains resolute. She dismissed rumors of a leadership challenge as “wishful thinking” and criticized detractors for treating politics as a game. “The lives of people in this country aren’t a game,” she asserted.
