The Norwegian Royal Court today announced that Crown Princess Mette-Marit, wife of Crown Prince Haakon, will require a lung transplant following a deterioration in her health condition. The princess has been living with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis since her diagnosis in October 2018, an incurable disease that causes scarring in the lungs and impairs breathing.

In recent months, Mette-Marit's condition has worsened, prompting her medical team to evaluate her for a transplant. Crown Prince Haakon shared insights into the family's experience, stating, “We have seen that she is struggling more to breathe.” He emphasized that the family has noticed significant changes in her health.

The Royal Court expressed hope for the procedure, noting that lung transplants offer a potential extension of life for patients with advanced pulmonary fibrosis. Mette-Marit, aged 52, has continued her royal duties where possible, but her activities have been limited by her illness.

The announcement underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the princess and her family. The Royal Court requests privacy during this time and will provide updates as appropriate.
