The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the immediate orderly room trial of police officers caught in a viral video allegedly sorting proceeds of extortion from members of the public.
The officers, attached to a division in the state, were identified and arrested following the circulation of the video, which showed them counting wads of cash believed to have been extorted from motorists and other road users in what appeared to be a "daily harvest."
Two senior officers have been issued queries, while two Inspectors are currently in detention pending the commencement of the orderly room trial. The Command has assured that the process will be thorough, transparent, and in line with police disciplinary procedures.
CP Oyeniyi reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion, illegal checkpoints, and all forms of unprofessional conduct by personnel. He warned that any officer found engaging in such acts will face severe disciplinary sanctions, including possible dismissal from service and prosecution where necessary.
“This administration will not condone any act capable of eroding public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. We are committed to restoring professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the ranks,” the CP stated.
The Delta State Police Command apologizes to the public for the embarrassment caused by the unprofessional behaviour of the affected officers and urges citizens to continue providing useful information that will aid in sanitizing the system.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any case of misconduct, extortion, or harassment by police personnel through the Command’s dedicated complaint channels or the nearest police station.
The Command remains committed to working closely with the good people of Delta State to ensure safety, security, and mutual respect between the police and the citizenry.
