President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The announcement was made by the President during his 2026 Democracy Day address, recognizing the pivotal contributions of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to Nigeria’s military, political, and democratic development.

General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (1943–1997) was a distinguished Nigerian military officer, politician, and statesman. He served as Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters (de facto Vice President) from 1976 to 1979 under General Olusegun Obasanjo. A key figure in Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1979, he later played a prominent role in pro-democracy movements during the late 1980s and 1990s. His legacy as a unifying leader, strategist, and advocate for national development continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.

Speaking on the renaming, President Tinubu described General Yar’Adua as “one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose contributions to national unity and democratic development continue to inspire the country.

The new university is expected to advance excellence in geological sciences, petroleum studies, engineering technology, and related disciplines, building on the foundation of the former institute to produce world-class professionals for Nigeria’s energy and mineral resources sector.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State welcomed the decision, noting that the institution will enhance human capital development in the region and honor a worthy son of Nigeria.

The renaming reflects the administration’s commitment to preserving national heritage, honoring exemplary service to the nation, and investing in critical sectors such as education and energy for sustainable development.
