The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has officially unveiled the “New Face of Alaba” International Market in Lagos, describing the transformation as a shining example of Nigerian enterprise, innovation, and economic resilience.
Speaking at a Gala and Award Night held in Ikoyi, Lagos, to mark the unveiling, the Minister noted that Alaba International Market has outgrown its traditional identity as a marketplace. It has emerged as a critical driver of economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement in Nigeria, with growing continental relevance.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Defence, Capt. Moses Yare, General Musa praised ongoing efforts within the market to promote quality assurance, support locally manufactured products, and combat counterfeit goods. These initiatives, he said, have positioned Alaba as a trusted commercial hub across Africa.
“The newly commissioned modern commercial complexes represent more than physical development. They symbolise the collective vision, perseverance, and commitment of the Alaba business community,” the Minister stated.
General Musa specially congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President-General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, and the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their roles in driving the transformation.
Reinforcing the link between security and economic prosperity, the Defence Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to providing a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive. He urged traders, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs in the Alaba community to sustain their culture of innovation, integrity, and excellence, while setting standards that demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to compete globally.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, also spoke at the event. He praised the resilience of Alaba traders and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking the market, noting that improved accessibility would further boost commerce, innovation, and employment generation.
The event also featured the recognition of individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of Alaba International Market.
