The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has advocated for leadership that is measured by its visible and positive impact on the lives of citizens.

Obi made the call while serving as the special guest of honour at an empowerment programme organised by the Member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Prof. Lilian Orogbu, in Awka.

At the event, Orogbu empowered more than 500 constituents with productive assets including cars, shuttle buses, tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, and generating sets. Scholarships were also awarded to selected students as part of efforts to support access to education in the constituency.

Commending the lawmaker for what he described as purposeful and people-oriented representation, Obi said such initiatives help improve livelihoods, reduce poverty, and contribute to addressing broader social challenges.

He expressed deep concern over rising unemployment, challenges in the education and healthcare sectors, and insecurity across the country, attributing many of these problems to poor governance and the mismanagement of public resources.

Reaffirming his vision for Nigeria, Obi emphasised that competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership remains the key to addressing hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship.

He further called for credible elections in 2027, urging Nigerians to reject electoral malpractice and uphold the principles of equity, justice, and fairness in the democratic process.

Prof. Lilian Orogbu explained that the empowerment programme was organised to appreciate her supporters, volunteers, and constituents who backed her during the 2023 general elections. She noted that over 36,000 people voted for her, while more than 5,000 supporters actively participated in her campaign.

Orogbu urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the items received, stressing that the initiative was designed not merely as welfare support but as a strategic intervention to improve livelihoods, create employment opportunities, and strengthen families across the constituency. She announced that another phase of the empowerment programme has been scheduled for November 2026.

Also speaking at the event, the Anambra State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, congratulated Orogbu for fulfilling campaign promises through effective constituency representation.

The Senator representing Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh, described Orogbu as a valuable representative who has distinguished herself through constituency projects, scholarships, infrastructure initiatives, and empowerment programmes. He urged constituents to support her bid for a second term.
