In a dramatic escalation of internal tensions, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the suspension of several top-ranking officials, including National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over allegations of anti-party activities and constitutional violations.
The announcement, made in the early hours of Friday by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, follows a series of internal disputes that have rocked the party’s leadership in recent weeks. According to the statement, the suspensions were carried out in accordance with Sections 57, 58, and 59 of the PDP Constitution, which empower the NWC to take disciplinary action against members found to be undermining the party’s integrity.
Also suspended is Ambassador Umar Damagum, the party’s Acting National Chairman, who has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation. The NWC cited “gross violations of the party’s constitution” and “conduct capable of bringing the party into disrepute” as grounds for the disciplinary measures.
This latest development deepens the crisis within the PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, as it prepares for upcoming elections and attempts to rebuild its national influence. The suspensions have sparked speculation about factional power struggles and the future of the party’s leadership structure.
In a counter move, a separate faction within the party reportedly attempted to suspend Ologunagba himself, further highlighting the fractured state of the PDP’s internal governance. However, the NWC maintains that its decisions are final pending review by the disciplinary committee.
