In a decisive move to enhance safety in the nation's capital, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered an immediate boost in security operations, including heightened surveillance at all borders connecting Abuja to neighboring states. This directive addresses rising concerns over banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities, particularly as the yuletide season approaches.

The Minister's instructions emphasize comprehensive reinforcement of security forces to curb crime and ensure the protection of residents and visitors. Key entry points and high-risk areas will see increased patrols and monitoring, with a focus on preventing vulnerabilities during festive periods.

As part of this initiative, Operation Sweep has been reactivated, involving a joint task force comprising the Military, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies. The operation has received full approval from Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police, ensuring coordinated efforts across strategic locations.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, briefed the joint team on the Minister's support, stating, “The FCT Minister, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, has given complete support, especially in terms of logistics for this operation. He has given approval, and I am sure that by the time we leave here today, the funds for fueling, servicing of vehicles and allowances for the men will have dropped into an account we can access.”

Additionally, the measures target street begging, often linked to criminal elements. CP Dantawaye added, “We wouldn’t want people loitering around the city claiming to be beggars because we know that some of them are not exactly beggars. Most come with criminal intent. We are going to profile them and take off the streets those who are criminally minded, even if they claim to be beggars.”

Collaboration with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other FCTA departments will help finalize legal frameworks to manage these issues effectively.

Minister Wike's proactive steps underscore the FCT Administration's commitment to maintaining Abuja as a secure and thriving capital city. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to authorities.
