Acclaimed Nigerian singer and songwriter Adekunle Gold has proudly disclosed his direct descent from Oba Kosoko, the 19th-century King of Lagos renowned for his fierce resistance against British colonial forces.

In a recent interview on Great Day Houston, a morning show on KHOU 11 television in Houston, Texas, the Afro-pop artist shared details of his rich heritage. Gold, a Lagos-born Yoruba musician, stated that his progenitor, King Kosoko, fought valiantly when the British first arrived in Lagos to seize control. The monarch was driven into exile but later returned victorious.

“My progenitor used to be king of Lagos. His name is King Kosoko. He fought the British when they first came to Nigeria through Lagos to try to take our things, then he fought, went to exile, and came back, and then still won,” Gold said during the interview, which was published on YouTube.

Oba Kosoko reigned as King of Lagos from 1845 to 1851 and is historically remembered for opposing British intervention amid succession disputes and trade interests in the region. His legacy as a symbol of resistance remains significant in Lagos and Nigerian history.

Adekunle Gold, celebrated for his soulful voice, chart-topping hits, and authentic storytelling in music, expressed deep pride in connecting with his royal roots. The revelation highlights the enduring cultural heritage of many Nigerian artists and their ties to traditional institutions.

In the same interview, Gold also reflected on his artistic journey, revealing that his stage name "Adekunle Gold" was divinely inspired during a church sermon after he prayed for guidance on his identity as an artist.

This announcement comes as Adekunle Gold continues to make waves internationally with his music while strengthening ties to his Lagos heritage, including recent visits to the Kosoko Royal Family.
