The All Progressives Congress (APC) Taraba State chapter today announced that Governor Agbu Kefas will formally defect to the party in January 2026. This follows his admission into the APC at the ward level, where party executives have already received him as a bona fide member.
The governor's defection, originally scheduled for November 19, faced postponement due to the tragic kidnapping of students in Kebbi State. Governor Kefas deemed it insensitive to proceed with political activities amid the national security crisis. Party leaders subsequently agreed to reschedule the official reception for January, avoiding the busy December holiday season.
APC Taraba State Chairman Ibrahim Tukur made the announcement during a press conference in Jalingo. He emphasized that the move represents a natural realignment to foster Taraba's development through stronger ties with the federal government.
"December is already jam-packed with activities. We don’t want to drag people across the state when families are preparing for Christmas and the New Year," Tukur stated. "The governor wrote to his ward executives, and they have duly received him. As far as party records are concerned, Governor Kefas is now a bona fide member of the APC."
Joining Governor Kefas are 15 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly and the entire state executive council. Tukur noted, "What you are seeing is a natural realignment. Key stakeholders around the governor have joined him, and more are coming. There is absolutely no cause for alarm.”
