The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has mobilized its members to shut down operations in Abuja, bringing the Federal Capital Territory to a standstill in solidarity with the ongoing indefinite strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

This action underscores the NLC's unwavering commitment to defending workers' rights amid allegations of unlawful withholding of entitlements by the FCTA.

The shutdown, which commenced yesterday, has paralyzed government offices, disrupted services across the six area councils, and highlighted the deepening crisis over unpaid wages.

According to NLC leadership, the FCTA has illegally withheld five months' wage awards and promotion arrears, actions described as a direct assault on workers' livelihoods and a violation of labor agreements.

Additional grievances include unremitted pension deductions and other forms of wage abuse, prompting the NLC to accuse the FCTA of intimidation tactics against striking workers.

NLC President Joe Ajaero stated, "This strike is not just about unpaid wages; it's a fight against systemic exploitation and disregard for the rule of law. We have directed all affiliates in the FCT to join this indefinite action until meaningful engagement occurs and all arrears are cleared. The shutdown of Abuja is a clear message that workers' rights are non-negotiable."

The NLC has called for mass action from all workers in the Federal Capital Territory, emphasizing that the strike will continue indefinitely until the FCTA addresses the demands.

This includes immediate payment of the withheld wage awards, settlement of promotion arrears, remittance of outstanding pensions, and an end to alleged intimidation.

The Congress urges the Federal Government to intervene promptly to resolve the impasse and prevent further escalation. "We seek dialogue, but we will not back down from protecting our members," Ajaero added.
