The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for enhanced collaboration with the United Nations to further bolster the credibility, transparency, and inclusiveness of elections in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan (SAN), made the appeal on Thursday, February 26, 2026, during a courtesy visit and meeting in Abuja with the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Fall, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms. Elsie Attafuah.

Professor Amupitan emphasized that deepening the longstanding partnership with the UN and its agencies would provide critical support in key areas such as capacity building for electoral officials, voter education, technological advancements in election management, and promoting greater participation, particularly among marginalized groups including women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

"The United Nations has been a valued partner in Nigeria's democratic journey, offering technical expertise and support that aligns with our commitment to global best practices in electoral administration," said Professor Amupitan. "As we prepare for upcoming elections, including off-cycle polls and the critical 2027 general elections, we seek even stronger collaboration to address emerging challenges and consolidate gains in electoral integrity."

The meeting highlighted ongoing and potential areas of cooperation, building on previous UN-supported initiatives such as those under the UNDP's electoral assistance programs, which have contributed to policy development, training, and inclusive electoral frameworks in line with international standards, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Mr. Mohammed Fall and Ms. Elsie Attafuah reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting Nigeria's democratic institutions at the request of national authorities.

They expressed appreciation for INEC's efforts in upholding transparent and credible electoral processes and indicated readiness to explore expanded technical assistance to enhance voter confidence and participation.

This renewed call for partnership comes at a pivotal time, as Nigeria implements reforms under the Electoral Act 2026 and focuses on preparations for future elections to ensure free, fair, and inclusive outcomes that reflect the will of the people.

INEC remains dedicated to working with all stakeholders national and international—to strengthen democracy and build public trust in the electoral system.
