The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), the foremost platform representing registered political parties in Nigeria, unequivocally condemns the brazen and reprehensible attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman and ex-Governor of Edo State Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and other prominent leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The incident occurred in Benin City, Edo State, shortly after a political ceremony to formally welcome former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata (also referred to as Olumide Apata in some reports) into the ADC.

Suspected thugs reportedly assaulted participants, targeting the ADC secretariat and the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, in what has been described as a grave manifestation of political intolerance and thuggery.

This violent act represents a dangerous escalation of political violence and a direct assault on Nigeria's democratic values. No individual or group should be subjected to such intimidation or harm for exercising their constitutional rights to associate, assemble, and engage in political activities.

The attack not only endangered the lives of respected national figures but also undermined the peace and stability that political parties and citizens alike strive to uphold.

IPAC calls on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to conduct a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation into the incident. Perpetrators must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, regardless of any political affiliations or motivations.

Impunity for political violence only emboldens further attacks and erodes public confidence in the democratic process.

Furthermore, IPAC urges all political actors, leaders, and supporters across party lines to reject violence in all its forms and commit to issue-based politics, peaceful engagement, and respect for the rule of law.

As Nigeria approaches future electoral cycles, such incidents must not be allowed to become the norm.

IPAC stands in solidarity with the affected leaders, the ADC, and all Nigerians who value democracy, and reaffirms its commitment to fostering a peaceful, inclusive, and violence-free political environment.
