In a major boost to national security, the Nigerian military has announced significant successes under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD, aimed at flushing out terrorists and criminals from forested and border areas in Kwara and Niger States. The update was delivered by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on February 27, 2026.

The operation was formally inaugurated by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, underscoring the military's commitment to proactive defence strategies in Nigeria's North-Central region. General Oluyede's directive emphasized intelligence-led operations and inter-agency collaboration to dismantle terrorist networks exploiting remote terrains. This launch marks a pivotal escalation in efforts to secure vulnerable border corridors, reflecting the Chief of Defence Staff's vision for a multi-faceted approach combining kinetic and non-kinetic measures.

Troops have extended their operational footprint across Kwara and Niger States, conducting targeted offensives against terrorist hideouts in forested and border areas. A standout engagement occurred on February 18, 2026, along the Kainji-Kwimo road in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, where intelligence-driven assaults neutralized scores of terrorists, rescued several hostages, and led to the recovery of substantial arms and ammunition. These actions have disrupted enemy logistics and morale, preventing further threats to civilian populations.

By prioritizing rapid response mechanisms and leveraging community-sourced intelligence, Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD has effectively curtailed ambushes, abductions, and other criminal activities, fostering safer travel and commercial corridors. Non-kinetic initiatives, including stakeholder forums with local leaders, have been instrumental in building trust, facilitating peace accords, and establishing early warning systems that empower communities to report suspicious activities promptly.

To build on these gains, the operation has initiated aggressive fighting patrols deep into forested sanctuaries, in close partnership with state governments. These patrols not only dominate criminal hideouts but also apply sustained pressure on terrorists, compelling them to abandon the area and seek refuge elsewhere. This comprehensive strategy enhances territorial control and contributes to long-term regional stability.

The Defence Headquarters remains steadfast in its constitutional mandate to safeguard lives and property across Nigeria. Under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD, the military is working tirelessly to rid the North-Central zone of terrorism and other criminal elements, ensuring that citizens can pursue their livelihoods without fear. Major General Onoja reaffirmed that these efforts align with broader national security objectives, promising continued vigilance and collaboration with all stakeholders to maintain a crime-free environment.

As Nigeria marks progress in its counter-terrorism campaign, Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD exemplifies the professionalism and resolve of the armed forces, bringing hope to affected communities and reinforcing the DHQ's role as the vanguard of public safety.
