Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has strongly condemned the reported assassination attempt on former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, during their recent visit to Edo State.
The incident, which occurred in Benin City involving gunmen who attacked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat and the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, has been widely described as a grave and disturbing development that has no place in Nigeria's democracy.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents, regardless of political affiliation.
"I strongly condemn the reported assassination attempt on former Governor Peter Obi and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun in Edo State. This development is deeply disturbing and has no place in our democracy," Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.
She highlighted concerns over overzealous political actors who, in attempts to demonstrate loyalty or impress higher authorities, resort to harassing or attacking members of the opposition. "Such actions are reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to our national unity.
Attempts to silence or endanger political figures undermine the very foundation of our democratic system," she added. The Senator called on relevant security agencies to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident without delay.
She urged that those responsible whether direct perpetrators or any individuals who may have incited or facilitated the attack be identified, apprehended, and held fully accountable under the law.
"As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I remain committed to defending democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians, irrespective of their political leanings.
Every citizen deserves the freedom to participate in the political process without fear of violence or intimidation," Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan affirmed.
She reiterated that violence has no role in political competition and that Nigeria's democracy can only thrive through dialogue, respect for differing views, and adherence to the rule of law.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called on all political leaders, stakeholders, and citizens to join in condemning this attack and to work collectively toward safeguarding democratic values and national unity.
