The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently experiencing internal divisions within its South-South zonal leadership following conflicting statements regarding the alleged endorsement of former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, as a presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The controversy stems from a consultative meeting held on February 27, 2026, in Benin City, Edo State, attended by senior party stakeholders, including former Edo State Governor and zonal leader Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. During the gathering, Amaechi formally briefed regional leaders on his intention to seek the ADC's presidential ticket in 2027.
Chief Odigie-Oyegun and some supporters, including National Vice Chairman (South-South) Sen. Usani Uguru Usani, described the response as a unanimous show of support. They cited a voice vote where participants reportedly voiced loud approval with no opposition, interpreting it as a clear endorsement of Amaechi's ambition.
This position was publicly shared, with some describing it as a strong backing from South-South leaders for the Rivers-born politician.
However, other key figures in the zonal leadership have firmly rejected this characterization. In a statement issued on February 28, 2026, South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary Mabel Oboh described reports of an endorsement as "misleading, undemocratic, and a troubling example of how selective narratives can distort political reality." She emphasized that the meeting was a courtesy consultation and grassroots mobilization session, not a formal endorsement process.
Deputy National Publicity Secretary Jackie Wayas echoed this, insisting no such decision was taken.
Prominent ADC chieftain Prof. Pat Utomi also dismissed the endorsement claims, stating that Amaechi's announcement was received traditionally but no discussion or endorsement occurred. He described representations of support as "inaccurate and disingenuous."
The conflicting accounts have sparked debate within the party about internal procedures, unity in the South-South zone, and the handling of presidential aspirations.
