Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced a remarkable turnaround in revenue generation at the iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta, revealing that the site now generates approximately ₦40 million monthly after extensive refurbishment by his administration.

Speaking recently, Governor Abiodun disclosed that prior to his government’s intervention, Olumo Rock was generating between ₦3 million and ₦4 million annually. Following the temporary closure for a comprehensive upgrade, the facility has been transformed into a world-class tourist destination, now raking in about ₦10 million weekly equivalent to roughly ₦40 million per month.

“When we assumed office, Olumo Rock was generating probably about three to four million naira annually. When I shut it down and carried out the refurbishment of Olumo Rock, it began to generate about ten million naira a week, about forty million a month, compared to three million a year,” the Governor stated.

The refurbishment, which included significant infrastructural improvements, modern amenities, and enhanced visitor experiences, has repositioned Olumo Rock as a premier tourism hub. The site, a historic landmark symbolizing the resilience and cultural heritage of the Egba people, now attracts substantially higher visitor numbers, contributing meaningfully to the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and broader economic growth.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that the success of the Olumo Rock project reflects his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the tourism sector as a viable alternative revenue source and a driver of sustainable development in Ogun State. The upgrade aligns with ongoing efforts to boost infrastructure, create employment opportunities in the hospitality and tourism value chain, and promote Ogun as an investment and leisure destination.

The Governor further noted that the facility has been concessioned to a private operator to ensure professional management, improved global visibility, and long-term sustainability, allowing the state to focus on other developmental priorities while benefiting from shared prosperity.

This impressive revenue leap underscores the impact of strategic investments in tourism infrastructure and serves as a model for leveraging Nigeria’s rich cultural and natural assets for economic diversification.

The Ogun State Government remains committed to building on this success by developing other tourist sites across the state and fostering public-private partnerships to unlock the full potential of the sector.
