Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has responded to growing calls from youth groups urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election, stating that he will consult widely before making any decision.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit by youth groups to his office in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized that the presidential race is a serious undertaking that demands careful consideration. “You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” he said.

The former president commended the youths for their patriotism and interest in the nation’s future. “If you have no interest in the country, you will not bother to be here,” he noted, while urging young Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process by obtaining voter cards and voting in elections.

Jonathan highlighted the need for peace and credible elections, warning that the absence of transparent electoral processes discourages competent individuals from entering politics. He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s persistently low voter turnout, describing it as one of the lowest among countries he has observed.

“I will consult. I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again. But I am telling you that I will consult. If there is a need to, I will wait,” Jonathan reiterated.

The statement comes amid ongoing political realignments and discussions about opposition strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
