Ladipo Johnson, former National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has officially resigned his membership of the party, effective immediately.
In a resignation letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of NNPP Ward G1 (Shitta/Ogunlana Ward) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State, Johnson cited the need for a broader national realignment of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections as the primary reason for his departure.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” Johnson stated. “This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition. I believe that at this juncture, my political journey must focus on fostering a more unified front to serve the overarching interests of our nation and its citizens.”
Johnson expressed profound gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunities afforded him, having served the party in key roles including National Auditor and National Publicity Secretary.
“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision,” he wrote. He also thanked members of the National Working Committee for their support and camaraderie.
The resignation follows recent major political developments, including the formal joining of former Kano State Governor Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Sources close to the matter indicate Johnson is expected to align with Kwankwaso and other leaders in the emerging opposition platform.
Johnson’s move underscores the ongoing efforts by key opposition figures to build a strong, unified alternative ahead of 2027, prioritizing national interest over partisan divisions.
