The Federal Government of Nigeria has commended the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and several other Nigerian institutions for their outstanding performance in recent global university rankings, describing the achievement as a significant milestone in the nation’s education sector transformation agenda.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, SAN, made the commendation during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that Nigerian universities continue to show remarkable progress on the international stage despite prevailing challenges.
“We are proud to see Nigerian universities like UI and UNILAG flying the national flag high in respected global rankings,” said Prof. Mamman. “These achievements reflect the dedication of our lecturers, the hard work of our students, and the commitment of university management to academic excellence. The Federal Government remains fully supportive of initiatives that will further strengthen our tertiary institutions.”
According to the latest rankings released by prominent global bodies, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos have recorded notable improvements in key performance indicators, including research output, international collaboration, academic reputation, and teaching quality. Other institutions such as Covenant University, Ahmadu Bello University, and Obafemi Awolowo University also received positive mentions in various global league tables.
The Minister highlighted that these results validate the Federal Government’s investments in research grants, infrastructure development, the TETFund intervention programmes, and the implementation of the Nigeria University System Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme.
“This is proof that our universities are gaining global competitiveness,” he added. “We will continue to create an enabling environment for more Nigerian institutions to rise in world rankings through sustained funding, policy reforms, and strategic partnerships with international bodies.”
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda in the education sector, promising continued support for faculty development, cutting-edge research, student exchange programmes, and digital transformation of university operations.
Parents, students, and stakeholders have been urged to take advantage of the improving quality of education in public universities while the government works towards expanding access and enhancing standards across all institutions.
