Blessing Fubara, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 Rivers State election, has firmly stated that he has no political godfather and relies solely on God for his ambition.
In a recent interview, Fubara addressed speculations linking his candidacy to his younger brother, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, dismissing them outright. He emphasized his independence and vision for the state.
“I don’t have a godfather but I have God the Father,” Fubara declared. “You would also agree with me that if my ambition is determined by the grounds you are mentioning, it would mean I have no clear vision or focus for what I am working toward.”
Fubara, a development consultant and Ambassador, picked up the NDC nomination forms in May 2026. He has pledged to serve only one term if elected, focusing on restoring peace, economic prosperity, and political stability in Rivers State amid its complex political landscape.
He stressed that he and his brother hold different political ideologies and individual perspectives, positioning his bid as driven by personal conviction and a commitment to the people of Rivers rather than familial or godfather influences.
This statement comes as Rivers State politics grapples with longstanding issues of godfatherism, particularly in light of past tensions involving Governor Fubara and his predecessor.
Fubara’s message underscores a call for issue-based politics and self-reliant leadership in the state.
