Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Governor of Anambra State, has accused elements within the Federal Government of actively working to prevent him from contesting in the 2027 presidential election.
In a recent statement, Obi expressed confidence in overcoming the alleged obstacles, emphasizing his focus on the ultimate goal of serving Nigerians rather than the challenges placed before him.
“If you know what they are doing to ensure that I’m not on the ballot in 2027, you will be surprised. The Nigerian government is doing everything to ensure that I do not contest in this election, but I’m not looking at the obstacles but at the destination,” Obi said.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate, who has since aligned with the NDC, reiterated his commitment to the democratic process and called for free, fair, and transparent elections. Obi has consistently maintained his intention to run in 2027, describing it potentially as his final bid for the presidency.
This latest allegation comes amid ongoing political realignments and legal battles involving opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi has previously raised concerns about potential manipulation of state institutions and urged the deferral of certain policies, such as the implementation of state police, until after the polls to avoid abuse.
