The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) concluded their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D campaign with a narrow 3-2 loss to Turkey in a thrilling encounter at SoFi Stadium, as Kaan Ayhan scored a dramatic winner with the final kick of the match.

Despite the defeat, the result has no impact on the USA’s progression, as they had already secured top spot in Group D with two earlier victories and will advance to the Round of 32. Coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded a heavily rotated squad, resting key players including captain Christian Pulisic, to manage fitness ahead of the knockout stages.

Turkey took an early lead through Arda Güler in the 10th minute, but the USA responded quickly with Auston Trusty equalizing in the 3rd minute. Barış Alper Yılmaz restored Turkey’s advantage in the 31st minute, only for Sebastian Berhalter to level the score at 2-2 in the 49th minute. The match remained end-to-end until deep into stoppage time, when Ayhan slotted home the decisive goal in the 98th minute.

Speaking after the match, Coach Pochettino expressed focus on the bigger picture: “We gave opportunities to players who deserved minutes, and we learned a lot. The result today doesn’t define us  we are ready for the knockout stage.”

The USMNT will now prepare to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, carrying strong momentum from their group-winning performances while addressing areas highlighted in this competitive outing against a motivated Turkish side. Turkey ended their tournament with their first win, providing a morale boost despite an earlier exit.

The match showcased high-intensity football and highlighted the depth of both squads in front of a passionate crowd at SoFi Stadium.
