The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the decision as a historic boost to troop welfare and operational readiness.
Under the new structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, approximately 250,000 officers and men across the Army, Navy and Air Force will benefit. Privates to Staff Sergeants will receive an 80 per cent increase, personnel from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will get a 50 per cent rise, while officers of the rank of Brigadier-General and above, including Generals, will enjoy a 30 per cent adjustment.
The review will raise the Armed Forces’ annual salary bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
In a statement, Matawalle said the approval reflects the President’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, wellbeing and operational effectiveness of the brave men and women who risk their lives daily to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“This historic intervention reflects His Excellency’s commitment to the welfare, wellbeing and operational readiness of our brave officers, soldiers, ratings and airmen who continue to make immense sacrifices in defence of our nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Minister stated.
He noted that the improved remuneration would boost morale, reinforce professionalism and inspire greater dedication among personnel in the discharge of their constitutional duties of defending the nation and protecting lives and property.
Matawalle further disclosed that the issue of an Armed Forces salary review had been a priority since the inception of the present administration and that he had personally championed the cause within government circles. He thanked the President for his visionary leadership and steadfast support for the military.
The salary increase comes as the Tinubu administration continues efforts to modernise the Armed Forces, expand recruitment and intensify operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
