The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the results of candidates sponsored by state governments indebted to the Council will not be released until outstanding registration fees are fully settled.
This position was restated by the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC during the official release of the latest West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates results.
The Council explained that while results for candidates who have met their financial obligations are accessible via the official results portal (www.waecdirect.org), those of candidates from indebted states remain withheld. WAEC appealed to the affected state governments to promptly clear their outstanding debts so that the concerned schools and candidates can access their results without further delay.
“I need not restate the fact that the results of candidates who are sponsored by states indebted to the Council will not be released now until payment is made. We appeal to the concerned to do the needful to enable the affected schools and candidates access their results,” the Head of the National Office said.
WAEC noted that the number of indebted states has reduced in recent days as some governments have begun making arrangements to settle their obligations. The Council declined to publish a full list of the remaining indebted states, citing ongoing engagements and the fluid nature of the payments.
This measure is consistent with WAEC’s longstanding policy of withholding results linked to unpaid state-sponsored registration fees. The Council emphasised that the decision is necessary to sustain its operations and ensure the integrity of its examination processes across the region.
Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations are advised to check their results on the Council’s website. Digital certificates will also be available for download shortly after results are accessed. Schools will receive copies of the Result Listing in due course.
WAEC urged all stakeholders, particularly state ministries of education, to prioritise the settlement of examination fees so that students are not unduly disadvantaged in their pursuit of further education and career opportunities.
