Lagos State Governor and Visitor to Lagos State University (LASU), Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has announced a personal cash gift of ₦20 million each to the two overall best graduating students of the university for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during the institution’s 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremonies held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the main campus in Ojo.
The beneficiaries are: Ayilara Lawal Olawale, Department of Project Management (Project Management Technology), who emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2024/2025 academic session with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96 (First Class Honours); and. Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, Department of Aerospace Engineering, who finished as the overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 academic session with a CGPA of 4.97 (First Class Honours).
Addressing the gathering, Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “Ayilara Lawal Olawale and Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, each one of you will earn 20 million naira each.”
In a subsequent statement, the Governor noted that the occasion marked his final convocation visit as Governor. He described the awards as recognition of exceptional dedication and discipline, adding that Lagos is proud of the students and that his commitment to investing in the youth remains firm through his last day in office. He also congratulated the entire graduating class on their hard work.
The combined ceremonies celebrated a historic graduating cohort of 20,604 students across the two academic sessions the largest in LASU’s history. This included 494 First Class graduates and 3,383 postgraduate students, among them 238 Doctors of Philosophy.
The cash gifts represent a significant increase from previous awards given by the Governor to LASU’s top graduating students.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, presided over the ceremonies.
