The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months of assuming office if elected in the 2027 general elections.
Adebayo made the commitment on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” he stated.
The SDP candidate said his administration would establish solar-panel manufacturing factories across the country and train Nigerians in the installation and maintenance of the systems. He proposed partnerships with countries such as China, Turkey and India to set up the factories, with Nigerians trained to operate them.
Adebayo recalled that he had previously advised the government on power issues and conducted a pilot project in his hometown, where he trained about 2,000 people. He noted that he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries himself.
He criticised past rural electrification strategies that relied on expensive grid extensions and argued that decentralised rooftop solar would provide electricity for basic household needs while creating employment.
The proposed solar clusters, he said, could generate up to 32,000 megawatts in total, with the national grid serving mainly as a backup.
