The Dangote Group expresses its deepest sorrow over the tragic passing of Miss Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna. Ruth succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating road accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State, on August 13, 2025.
Since the incident, the Dangote Group, in collaboration with its insurance partners, had been actively supporting Ruth and her family—providing full medical care, financial assistance, and emotional support. Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, had undergone emergency surgery following the accident, including the amputation of one leg.
In a statement released by the company, Dangote Group confirmed that arrangements had been finalized to fly Ruth to India for advanced medical treatment, pending clearance from her doctors. Tragically, despite these efforts and Ruth’s courageous fight for survival, she passed away in the early hours of August 31, 2025.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor. On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read. “Safety, accountability, and compassion remain central to our operations, and we are committed to strengthening our systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
The company also acknowledged the public concern and emotional outpouring surrounding the incident, especially from Ruth’s sister Phyna, whose advocacy brought national attention to the case. The Dangote Group reiterated its commitment to transparency, justice, and continued support for the Otabor family.
