In a recent media briefing at the Defence Headquarters on Friday, 30 January 2026, Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted the successes of Operation UDO KA in combating terrorism, sea piracy, militancy, and other criminal activities across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. Responding to distress calls, Nigerian troops have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in restoring peace and order in the region. Major General Onoja noted that over 80 militants have voluntarily surrendered to the Nigerian Military, marking a significant shift in the security landscape, while eight Cameroonian nationals were successfully rescued during a cross-border patrol along the Bakassi waterways.

The operation's impact is evident in the drastic reduction of crime rates compared to previous periods. During the month, troops neutralized several terrorists, arrested 22 suspects, and rescued 11 kidnapped victims, showcasing their commitment to protecting civilians. Arms and ammunition recovered from these engagements are now in military custody for further investigation and action, further weakening criminal networks in the South East.

Under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Armed Forces continue to adapt strategies to address evolving threats, ensuring sustained progress toward stability. Major General Onoja emphasized that these achievements stem from inter-agency collaboration, community support, and the troops' unwavering professionalism in upholding their constitutional mandate.

Major General Onoja assured Nigerians that the Defence Headquarters remains steadfast in its continuous support to safeguard lives and properties in the South East, deploying additional resources and intelligence-driven operations to prevent resurgence of insecurity. With General Oluyede at the helm, the military is intensifying efforts to build on these gains, fostering a safer environment for residents and promoting lasting peace across the region.
