In a major leadership transition at Nigeria’s electoral body, May Agbamuche-Mbu has officially taken over as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the handover by outgoing chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The announcement was made during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at INEC headquarters in Abuja, where Professor Yakubu formally stepped aside to begin his terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure.
“I urge all commissioners, directors, and staff of the Commission to extend their full support to Agbamuche-Mbu to ensure continuity and stability in INEC’s operations,” said Professor Yakubu during the handover ceremony.
Agbamuche-Mbu’s appointment has been met with cautious optimism by stakeholders, who emphasize the need for impartiality, transparency, and continuity in the Commission’s operations.
