In a decisive move to address the perennial challenge of flooding in Lagos State, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the dredging of 28 critical drainage channels across the state.
This strategic intervention forms part of the state government’s comprehensive flood mitigation strategy aimed at improving water flow, reducing flood risks, and safeguarding lives, properties, and infrastructure during the rainy season.
The approved dredging exercise will target major canals, secondary and tertiary channels in flood-prone areas, including parts of the Lagos Mainland, Island, and suburban communities. The project is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of the drainage system, minimise waterlogging, and promote a cleaner, more resilient environment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of proactive measures in protecting residents: “The dredging of these 28 drainage channels is a critical step in our ongoing efforts to build a more resilient Lagos. We remain committed to tackling flooding head-on through sustained infrastructure investment, regular maintenance, and innovative solutions. Our goal is to ensure that every part of the state is better protected from flood disasters.”
The project will be executed in phases with strict adherence to environmental standards and quality control. It complements other ongoing initiatives such as the construction of new drainage systems, road upgrades, and the deployment of flood early warning mechanisms.
Residents are advised to desist from dumping waste into drainage channels and to cooperate with government officials during the exercise for optimal results.
The Lagos State Government reiterates its dedication to delivering a flood-resilient megacity through sustained investment in infrastructure and environmental management.
