President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the tragic killing of Ms. Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a rising news anchor with Arise News Television, who was murdered during a robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a statement released by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President condemned the act as “cruel and condemnable,” and directed security and law enforcement agencies to “fish out the killers without delay.” He extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues at Arise News, and the broader Nigerian media community.
“Ms. Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner,” Tinubu said. “Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to citizen safety and pledged to strengthen measures aimed at combating crime in all its forms. The killing has sparked widespread outrage, with media organizations, civil society groups, and government officials calling for justice.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also expressed deep sorrow, describing the death as “painful and most unfortunate,” and offered prayers for the bereaved family.
The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to support the police investigation, while the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) mourned the loss of a “dedicated journalist committed to shedding light on important issues.”
The incident, which occurred on September 29, 2025, comes amid rising insecurity in the FCT, including violent robberies and home invasions. The President’s directive signals a renewed urgency in addressing the growing threat to public safety.
