Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, revealed shocking details about security breaches in Nigeria's recruitment processes. During a special plenary session on national security, Wase disclosed that suspected Boko Haram members and other criminals appeared on lists for the Nigerian Army and Police.

Wase, an All Progressives Congress lawmaker representing Wase Federal Constituency in Plateau State, emphasized the risks of such infiltrations. "My brother and friend, the former Defence Committee Chairman, Hon Betara, can attest to this," Wase stated. "There were recruitment exercises where names of known Boko Haram members appeared on the shortlist. Armed robbers and other criminals were also found among those cleared for the Army and Police."

The revelation came amid discussions on rising insecurity across Nigeria. Wase warned that endorsing unqualified candidates undermines national safety. He urged lawmakers and officials to recommend only credible individuals for security roles. Additionally, Wase shared personal losses, noting he has lost a brother, cousin, and nephew to terrorist attacks.

Other lawmakers echoed concerns. Hon. Sada Soli highlighted complex insecurity in the North West, calling for governance reforms. Hon. Muktar Betara addressed terrorism in the North East, while Hon. Solomon Bob criticized leadership failures since 1999. Hon. Kafilat Ogbara decried the impact on women and children, including abductions.

Wase also advocated reviewing a presidential directive on police withdrawals from VIP duties to ensure protection for key officials. This session underscores urgent needs for stronger vetting in security agencies.
