The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Uwem Umanah, leader of a local masquerade cultural group known as Ekpo, following reports of public disturbance, extortion, and illegal assembly in the state.
According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the arrest was made after a distress call from a concerned citizen alerted authorities to the group’s disruptive activities. The masquerade troupe was allegedly involved in blocking public highways, intimidating passersby, and extorting money from residents in the affected area.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two individuals, including the leader of a masquerade cultural group, for a series of criminal activities,” the statement read. “These include illegal assembly, armed blockage of a public highway, and extortion. The arrest followed a distress call received from a member of the public who reported that the group was attacking citizens and obstructing traffic.”
The incident has sparked renewed concern over the conduct of masquerade groups in the state, many of which are traditionally celebrated for their cultural significance but have increasingly been linked to acts of violence and intimidation. The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, warning that any masquerade group found violating the law will face prosecution.
Authorities have also emphasized the importance of respecting Akwa Ibom’s Masquerades (Control) Law, which outlines strict guidelines for public performances and prohibits any form of coercion, extortion, or obstruction of public spaces.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged accordingly. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the group’s activities and whether additional arrests are warranted.
