Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's faction within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) today confirmed its active search for a southern politician to serve as running mate in the 2027 presidential election. This strategic move aims to build a balanced ticket that appeals to diverse regions and challenges President Bola Tinubu's administration.

The bloc prioritizes Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, as its top choice for the vice-presidential slot. If Obi declines, the group plans to approach Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation. Both candidates bring strong southern representation, with Obi from the Southeast and Amaechi from the South-South, enhancing the ticket's national unity appeal.

Atiku, who recently defected to the ADC from the Peoples Democratic Party, previously ran with Obi as his running mate in 2019. Although they contested separately in 2023, Atiku's ally Dele Momodu now advocates for a reunion, describing Atiku and Obi as a "formidable duo" capable of unseating Tinubu.caeabf This effort underscores Atiku's commitment to opposition unity and progressive governance.

Obi's media aide, Yunusa Tanko, affirmed Obi's interest in the 2027 race but emphasized the need for negotiations on clear terms. Meanwhile, Amaechi firmly rejected any vice-presidential role, stating, "My ambition is to become president," and insisting he will not settle for less. These statements highlight the dynamic nature of ongoing discussions.

Atiku's camp stresses that this search promotes inclusivity and addresses regional imbalances. "We actively pursue partnerships that foster renewed hope and economic revival for all Nigerians," a spokesperson noted. The bloc encourages eligible leaders to engage in building a stronger opposition front.
