Lionel Messi reached another historic milestone on Sunday night, scoring his 930th career goal with a trademark free-kick, as Inter Miami CF were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego FC in a Major League Soccer regular-season match at Nu Stadium.
The Argentine superstar’s strike in the 24th minute also marked his 101st goal for Inter Miami and his 20th of the 2026 MLS season. It came just four days after he netted his 100th goal for the club in a Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
San Diego took an early lead in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer latched onto a through ball from Jeppe Tverskov and delicately chipped the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi restored parity 12 minutes later. Fouled just outside the penalty area, the 39-year-old stepped up and curled a left-footed free-kick around the wall. The ball struck the post before crossing the line beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos. The goal was also Messi’s 75th career free-kick strike.
Inter Miami went ahead in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez finished a clever pass from Rodrigo De Paul to make it 2-1. However, San Diego fought back, with Dreyer scoring his second of the night in the 82nd minute to secure a point for the visitors.
The result extended Inter Miami’s run of consecutive MLS draws to four. The Herons now sit on 46 points from 26 matches (12 wins, 4 defeats, 10 draws).
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the milestone on X: “Lionel Messi has now reached 930 career goals… by scoring his 75th free kick goal. 101 goals wearing Inter Miami shirt.”
