The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) today called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to provide immediate clarification on the legal foundation for recent United States airstrikes conducted in Sokoto State.

This demand follows reports of U.S. military actions targeting suspected ISWAP terrorists in the region, which raise serious questions about Nigeria's sovereignty and adherence to international law.

RULAAC expresses deep concern over the implications of foreign military intervention on Nigerian soil without transparent public disclosure. The organization highlights that such operations must comply with Nigeria's constitution and international treaties to avoid undermining national independence.

Furthermore, RULAAC urges the government to reveal any agreements or authorizations that permitted these strikes, ensuring accountability to the Nigerian people.

In a statement, RULAAC's Executive Director, Comrade Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated: "The Tinubu administration must explain the legal basis for allowing U.S. airstrikes in Sokoto. Nigerians deserve transparency on matters affecting our sovereignty and security. Without clear justification, these actions risk eroding public trust and violating our laws."

The airstrikes, confirmed by the U.S. military, targeted ISWAP militants in northwest Nigeria. The Federal Government has acknowledged its awareness and engagement with the U.S. on counter terrorism efforts. However critics including human rights advocates, argue that the strikes may infringe on Nigeria's territorial integrity and call for parliamentary oversight.

RULAAC emphasizes the need for the government to prioritize national security through domestic capabilities while respecting legal frameworks. The Centre commits to monitoring developments and advocating for rule of law in all security operations.
