Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent spate of violent attacks in Benue and Plateau States, describing them as unacceptable and a failure of leadership that must be urgently addressed.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and the devastation caused by the attacks, which have once again targeted vulnerable farming communities and displaced families in the affected regions.
“We cannot accept this tragic cycle of violence as normal,” Obi declared. “The recurring killings, destruction of farmlands, and displacement of innocent citizens in Benue and Plateau States represent a profound failure that demands immediate and decisive action from all levels of government. Every life lost is one too many, and the blood of these innocent Nigerians cries out for justice and lasting peace.”
Obi extended his deepest condolences to the families of victims and affected communities. He called on security agencies to intensify operations to apprehend perpetrators and prevent further attacks, while urging the Federal and State Governments to deploy comprehensive strategies that address root causes, including farmer-herder conflicts, inadequate security presence, and the proliferation of arms.
“Beyond condemnations, we need concrete, sustained solutions,” he added. “This includes investing in modern agricultural practices that reduce resource conflicts, strengthening community policing, promoting dialogue and reconciliation among ethnic and religious groups, and holding accountable those who sponsor or benefit from this insecurity. Nigeria’s human and agricultural potential cannot continue to be wasted by preventable violence.”
Obi further stressed the need for a holistic approach to national security that prioritizes the protection of lives and livelihoods, especially in the food-producing Middle Belt region, warning that continued instability threatens national food security and economic stability.
He commended local leaders, civil society organizations, and security personnel risking their lives to protect citizens and called for greater collaboration among all stakeholders to restore peace and normalcy.
“Every Nigerian, regardless of tribe or faith, deserves the right to live in peace and pursue their livelihood without fear. We must rise above partisan politics and confront this national emergency together,” Obi concluded.
Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote lasting peace, good governance, and inclusive development across Nigeria.
