Sharia Law Poses No Threat to Christians, Affirms Bauchi Traditional Ruler

Aminu Danmaliki, the respected custodian of the Danmalikin Bauchi title, today reassured Nigerians that Sharia law in the country does not endanger Christians or their faith. He emphasized this point amid ongoing debates sparked by calls from some Christian activists to abolish Sharia in northern states.

Danmaliki firmly stated that Sharia applies solely to Muslims who willingly submit to it. "Sharia has no jurisdiction over non-Muslims," he declared. The Nigerian Constitution safeguards this principle, ensuring non-Muslims face no compulsion to appear in Sharia courts or adhere to its rulings. Instead, they retain full access to secular courts.

Moreover Danmaliki highlighted practical benefits. Many Christians voluntarily choose Sharia courts for disputes involving Muslims because these courts deliver faster and less corrupt justice. This choice demonstrates harmony rather than conflict.

He strongly rejected recent efforts by Christian activists to discredit Sharia internationally. These groups recently lobbied the US Congress, alleging that Sharia fuels genocide against Christians in Nigeria. Danmaliki dismissed such claims as baseless misinformation driven by fear and political agendas. "Muslims will never accept a governance system without Sharia, which the Constitution fully recognizes," he asserted.

Danmaliki also drew on history to support his view. He noted that Sharia influenced English common law through Norman interactions with Muslim Sicily and earned praise in early American legal thought for its humane and protective qualities. For instance, a 1894 US Supreme Court ruling described Islamic law as rational and safeguarding civil liberties.

However critics maintain that Sharia contributes to religious persecution. Reports indicate escalating violence against Christians by jihadist groups like Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, leading to calls for its abolition. US lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, have introduced bills addressing this alleged persecution.

Despite these concerns, Danmaliki urged dialogue over division. He argued that Nigeria's multi-legal system – incorporating common, customary, and Sharia laws – promotes multiculturalism and justice for all.

Danmaliki called for mutual respect. "Knowledge dispels fear. Sharia upholds equity and fairness, benefiting society without harming any faith."
