The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has hailed the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their hard-fought bronze medal win at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Akpabio described the achievement as a powerful source of inspiration for Nigerians across the nation and in the diaspora.
The Super Eagles secured a record-extending ninth AFCON bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in a tense third-place play-off at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on Saturday.
The match ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes, showcasing the resilience and defensive prowess of both teams. This victory marks Nigeria's flawless record in AFCON third-place matches, having won all eight they have contested.
In a statement released today, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Senate President Akpabio commended the team’s performance against the Pharaohs of Egypt.
“The match against the Pharaohs of Egypt was a testament to your skills and determination, and I commend you for your exceptional performance,” Akpabio said. “Your victory is a testament to the talent and resilience that Nigeria is renowned for, and we are proud to have you represent our country on the international stage.”
Akpabio urged the players to build on this success for future tournaments. “I urge you to celebrate this achievement with pride and use it as a motivation to strive for even greater heights in your future endeavours. Your achievement is a source of inspiration to millions of Nigerians, and we look forward to seeing your continued success,” he added.
The Senate President’s remarks come amid widespread national pride following the Super Eagles’ campaign, which saw them advance to the semi-finals before a penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco. Egypt, meanwhile, fell 1-0 to Senegal in their semi-final.
Akpabio concluded: “Once again, congratulations to the Super Eagles on this remarkable achievement. May your bronze medal serve as a reminder of your capabilities and the heights you can reach with hard work and determination.”
This bronze medal adds to Nigeria’s storied history in African football, reinforcing the Super Eagles’ status as one of the continent’s most successful teams.
