The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has clarified that the 52 individuals arrested in connection with the recent violence in Ekpoma, Edo State, were involved in criminal activities such as looting, vandalism, and armed robbery, and not peaceful protesters.
The arrests followed a protest against rising kidnappings in the area, which unfortunately escalated into violence. Police reports indicate that the demonstration, initially peaceful, was hijacked by criminal elements leading to widespread destruction and theft.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized the distinction between lawful assembly and criminality. "While peaceful protest is a constitutional right, violence would not be tolerated," Egbetokun stated.
He further noted that a total of 52 persons suspected of participating in violent acts were apprehended, along with 11 others linked to armed robbery and related crimes.
Exhibits recovered during the operation include firearms, stolen vehicles, and other items used in the commission of these offenses. The suspects, many of whom are students from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, have been remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre pending further investigation.
The Nigeria Police Force deployed heavy security to restore order and prevent further criminality in the region. IGP Egbetokun urged citizens to report suspicious activities and reaffirmed the police's commitment to protecting lives and property while upholding the right to peaceful assembly.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in Edo State, including addressing the surge in kidnappings that prompted the initial protest.
