Nasarawa Government Spends N707 Million on Refreshments While Rural Water Provision Suffers Neglect

Citizens for Transparent Governance (CTG) today condemns the Nasarawa State Government's extravagant spending of N707 million on refreshments. This occurs amid severe neglect of rural water provision, leaving millions without access to clean water.

The government allocated these funds for office refreshments, entertainment, and related expenses in the 2025 fiscal year. Officials used the money for snacks, beverages, and catering at meetings. Meanwhile, rural communities struggle with dry taps and contaminated sources. Residents trek long distances for water, which exposes them to health risks.

CTG uncovered this disparity through budget analysis. The report shows that water projects received minimal funding. Only a fraction went to rural sanitation and supply initiatives. As a result, diseases like cholera spread in villages. Families spend hours fetching water instead of working or attending school.

Governor Abdullahi Sule's administration prioritizes luxury over essentials. CTG spokesperson, Dr. Aisha Mohammed, states, "This spending reveals misplaced priorities. Leaders enjoy refreshments while citizens thirst for basic needs. We demand accountability now."

Furthermore, experts note the economic impact. Poor water access hampers agriculture, the backbone of Nasarawa's economy. Farmers lose crops due to drought, which worsens poverty. In contrast, other states invest heavily in water infrastructure.

CTG calls for immediate action. The government must redirect funds to water projects. They should drill boreholes, repair dams, and promote hygiene education. Additionally, lawmakers need to probe the refreshments budget.

The group urges donors and federal authorities to intervene. International partners can support sustainable water solutions. With collective effort, Nasarawa can achieve equitable development.

In conclusion, this issue demands urgent reform. Citizens deserve transparent governance that addresses real needs. CTG commits to monitoring progress and advocating for change.
