US Will Take Greenland One Way or Another, Says Trump

President Donald Trump today reiterated the United States' determination to secure control of Greenland. He emphasized that the territory plays a vital role in protecting American interests against threats from Russia and China. Trump stated that the U.S. will pursue this goal through negotiation or other means if necessary.

The President spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One. He highlighted Greenland's strategic importance in the Arctic region. Trump warned that without U.S. ownership, adversaries could exploit the island's vulnerabilities. "We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security," Trump declared. He added, "If we don't do it the easy way, we're going to do it the hard way."

This stance builds on Trump's long-standing interest in Greenland. During his first term in 2019, he proposed purchasing the island from Denmark. Now, in 2026, the administration revives this push amid growing global rivalries. Officials point to Greenland's vast mineral resources and its position for military operations.

Vice President JD Vance supports the initiative. He criticized Denmark for inadequate investment in Greenland's defenses. "Their defense is basically two dog sleds," Trump quipped, underscoring the need for stronger U.S. involvement. The administration already maintains Thule Air Base under a 1951 treaty, but Trump argues this arrangement falls short.

Denmark and Greenland have pushed back strongly. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the threats unacceptable and warned of NATO's potential collapse. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen affirmed that residents seek independence, not annexation. "We want to be Greenlanders, not Americans," Nielsen stated.

Despite the opposition, the White House explores options. Envoys, including Jeff Landry, engage in discussions. Trump dismissed concerns about alliances. He insisted that securing Greenland benefits NATO overall. "Russia or China will take over if we don't act," he said.

The administration invites dialogue but remains firm. Trump concluded, "We're going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not." This move aims to safeguard U.S. security in an increasingly contested Arctic.
