The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today addressed ongoing discussions regarding the investigation of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN. Chairman Ola Olukoyede emphasized that the probe predates his appointment and remains focused on upholding justice without bias.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Olukoyede clarified the timeline of the case. He stated that the investigation began under former Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu and continued through Acting Chairman Ibrahim Chukkol. "The investigation of this man predated me in the office," Olukoyede declared. He added that he inherited the file and ensured a thorough review before proceeding.

Olukoyede dismissed allegations of political witch-hunting or personal vendetta. He highlighted that Malami has been under scrutiny for nearly two and a half years, following the exit of the Buhari administration. The EFCC proceeded cautiously to build a solid case, including recent court actions for interim forfeiture of properties linked to Malami and his family.

Additionally, the Department of State Services (DSS) has initiated a separate probe into arms allegedly discovered at Malami's Kebbi residence. A court has granted Malami and any claimants 14 days to prove the legal acquisition of these assets.

The EFCC remains committed to transparent and impartial anti-corruption efforts. Olukoyede urged Nigerians to support these investigations, noting, "We have not wavered in investigating and prosecuting those suspected of being involved in corruption cases." He reiterated that the agency acts on evidence, not politics.

This clarification aims to foster public understanding and confidence in the EFCC's operations. The Commission invites constructive dialogue while prioritizing accountability.
