The New Castle County Police Department announced today that William Stevenson, 77, the ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, 64. The incident occurred on December 28, 2025, at their home in Wilmington, following a reported domestic dispute.
Officers responded to the residence shortly after 11 p.m. on December 28, where they found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Despite life saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An extensive weeks-long investigation led to a grand jury indictment on February 2, 2026, charging Stevenson with first-degree murder.
Stevenson was taken into custody on February 2 and is currently being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail. He was previously married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975.
"This tragic incident highlights the serious nature of domestic disputes, and our department is committed to thorough investigations to ensure justice is served," said Colonel Joseph Bloch, Chief of New Castle County Police. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the case.
