Former presidential candidate, former Governor of Anambra State, and prominent Nigerian political leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has vehemently condemned the recent use of tear gas by security forces against peaceful Nigerian citizens protesting at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The demonstrators were exercising their constitutional rights to demand free, fair, and credible elections, including the mandatory electronic transmission of results to safeguard electoral integrity ahead of future polls.
In a statement issued on February 17, 2026, Mr. Obi described the incident as a "national embarrassment" and a stark illustration of why Nigeria has become a "Now Disgraced Nation" in the eyes of the world.
He stated: "Again we are showing the world why we are a ‘Now Disgraced Nation.’ Harmless citizens performing their constitutionally guaranteed duties peacefully were tear-gassed simply for asking for what is right: free, fair, and credible elections in a democratic nation."
Mr. Obi lamented that those who once positioned themselves as champions of democracy have now become its destroyers and the "worst enemies of good governance." He highlighted the irony and tragedy of security agencies turning on unarmed citizens who are merely calling for the transparency and accountability that are foundational to any true democracy.
The peaceful protest focused on pressing for electoral reforms, particularly the real-time electronic transmission of election results—an essential measure to prevent manipulation and restore public trust in Nigeria's democratic process.
Mr. Obi reaffirmed his unwavering support for such reforms, emphasizing that free and fair elections are not optional but imperative for rebuilding Nigeria's global image, fostering national unity, and securing a prosperous future for all citizens.
"I urge Nigerians, en masse, to resist these continued evil plans, to stand united against the destruction of our nation and collective future, and to ensure that free and fair elections are firmly established for the sake of our future," Mr. Obi declared.
Mr. Obi called on the government, security agencies, and all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, respect citizens' fundamental rights to peaceful assembly and expression, and prioritize dialogue over repression.
He stressed that violence against peaceful protesters only deepens divisions and undermines the very democratic principles Nigeria claims to cherish.
