A devastating road traffic incident occurred yesterday, February 10, 2026, along the Okota to Mile 2 corridor (Ballet inward area) in the Isolo/Okota axis of Lagos State, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to eight others.
According to preliminary reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a yellow commercial minibus (popularly known as "Korope" or "Faka," registration number SMK 823 YK) was involved in the accident.
The vehicle, carrying nine occupants including the driver, reportedly attempted a sudden maneuver to avoid an obstruction or another vehicle while traveling at considerable speed.
The abrupt action caused the driver to lose control, leading the minibus to overturn multiple times (somersault) before bursting into flames. The fire was triggered by a five-litre container of petrol stored inside the vehicle, which ignited upon impact and spilled during the crash, resulting in a rapid and intense inferno.
Tragically, the driver and a female passenger seated in the front were burnt beyond recognition and confirmed dead at the scene. LASTMA operatives, who were conducting routine patrol and surveillance in the area, responded swiftly to the emergency.
Together with assistance from public-spirited motorists, they successfully rescued and evacuated the eight injured passengers before the fire engulfed the entire vehicle.
The injured victims were immediately provided with first aid and rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. Their conditions are currently being monitored by medical professionals.
This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with reckless driving, excessive speed, and the dangerous practice of carrying inflammable substances in public transport vehicles.
Authorities have reiterated calls for strict adherence to road safety regulations, including proper vehicle maintenance, speed limits, and the prohibition of hazardous items on passenger-carrying vehicles.
The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA and relevant emergency services, extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing to prevent future occurrences and ensure accountability.
LASTMA urges all road users, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and report any unsafe practices on the roads.
