The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, GSSRS, POS (Africa), on Thursday led a high-powered delegation of prominent Rivers State political leaders to London, United Kingdom, to pay a heartfelt condolence visit to the family of the late Distinguished Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Senator Mpigi, a dedicated public servant and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 64, following a brief illness. His demise has been widely mourned as a profound loss to the Ogoni people, Rivers State, and the nation at large.
Accompanied by his sons, Jordan and Joaquin Wike, the Minister met with the late senator's widow, Mrs. Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children at their residence in London.
The delegation, acting on behalf of the leadership and people of Rivers State, conveyed deep sympathies and solidarity to the bereaved family ahead of their return to Nigeria.
In his remarks during the visit, Minister Wike described the late Senator Mpigi as "a dependable ally who stood by his friends even during trying times." He emphasized that Senator Mpigi's passing came at a moment when his wealth of experience, loyalty, and influence were still greatly needed in Rivers State and national politics.
The Minister assured the family of continued support from the Rivers State leadership and pledged that the late senator would receive a befitting burial in honour of his contributions to democracy, infrastructure development, and the progress of his constituency.
"The delegation was sent by the elders and leaders of Rivers State, many of whom could not travel due to age and other commitments, but who insisted on this personal expression of solidarity before the family returns home," Minister Wike stated. "We stand with you in this moment of grief, and Rivers State will continue to support the family."
The visit underscores the deep bonds of friendship, loyalty, and shared commitment to the development of Rivers State that existed between Minister Wike and the late senator.
The Federal Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory joins the government and people of Rivers State in praying for the repose of the soul of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi and for strength and comfort for his family during this difficult period.
