In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, Offiong Edet, the best graduating student of the University of Calabar (UniCal), has disclosed that he slept in classrooms for 13 months while pursuing his studies.

Edet, who graduated with distinction in Business Education, was named the overall best graduating student at UniCal’s 38th convocation ceremony held today in Calabar. Despite coming from a poor background and lacking funds for personal accommodation, he maintained unwavering focus and academic excellence throughout his programme.

“I had no money to secure personal accommodation because of my poor background,” Edet said. “Although I had no shelter, I maintained perfect academic commitment. I attended classes, and completed all assignments and tests.”

He credited his success to discipline, humility, and a laser-focused mindset. “I was able to achieve academic success because I was determined and focused during this journey,” he added. “I approached my academic tasks with a huge sense of discipline. I saw school and learning as my master; I saw myself as the servant.”

Edet also urged students to prioritise dedication and called on university authorities to enforce stricter discipline. “Students who remain focused and committed are less likely to encounter difficulties during their studies,” he noted. “The authorities should be stricter in enforcing discipline. Students should be more determined, focused, and dedicated to achieving their academic goals.”

The University of Calabar community has hailed Edet’s achievement as an inspiring example of what is possible through perseverance, even in the face of significant adversity. His story highlights the challenges many students face in accessing decent accommodation and underscores the power of personal commitment in higher education.
